Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (NEEPCO) Doyang
Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (NEEPCO) Doyang in Nagaland began its journey in 2000 under the aegis of Vivekananda Kendra Shiksha Prasar Vibhag (VKSPV). Before this, a Kendriya Vidyalaya operated on the Doyang Hydro Power Station (then Doyang Hydro Electric Project) campus of NEEPCO, which was later replaced by the current Vidyalaya following an agreement between its parent organization, Vivekananda Kendra, and NEEPCO. The school is funded by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO).
Location and Surroundings:
Located in a picturesque setting within the Doyang Hydro Power Station (DHPS) campus, the Vidyalaya is about 38 km from the district headquarters in Wokha. The Doyang River, one of Nagaland's key rivers, enhances the beauty of the area. A notable feature of the Doyang River is the 75 MW Hydro Electric Power Plant—the only power plant in the state. The dam site is situated approximately 2 km upstream of Lotha Bridge, where the Chubi and Doyang rivers converge at South Pangti village, harnessing the waters of both rivers. The region is surrounded by dense forests and mountains, with nearby villages including Riphyim, Englan, Changsu, Yikhum, and Pangti. In this serene environment, people from various parts of India live together, serving humanity and sharing their diverse cultures and traditions.
Early Challenges and Hardships:
During the initial years of the school, the staff faced many hardships. Making a phone call was a distant dream for the inhabitants of Doyang. Once a month, a teacher would go to Golaghat to make phone calls and convey messages to every teacher’s family, relieving the anxiety of their families. It was almost like a dream come true when the people of Doyang finally received mobile service in 2006.
The next challenge was the poor road conditions. The road connecting Doyang and Merapani suffered irreparable damage due to heavy rainfall, resulting in landslides. To overcome this difficulty, people would store groceries for a couple of months. Often, Kendra Karyakartas and Adhikaris had to postpone their scheduled visits to Doyang due to the inaccessible road. In the worst conditions, people would travel on foot. Everyone became accustomed to these extreme hardships, which were even more severe in the case of medical emergencies.
Turning Struggles into Strength:
Despite these difficulties and obstacles, the staff of the Vidyalaya never lost hope. The adverse circumstances became a means to discover new approaches to overcoming hardships in life. The Principal, teachers, and other staff members have always strived for excellence in all aspects. The discipline displayed by students in various competitions held both within and outside the school, as well as their performance in co-curricular activities, attracted the attention of well-wishers, parents, and others. Moreover, the growing academic excellence has been a catalyst in increasing the Vidyalaya's student strength. Until 2007, students had to go to Golaghat to appear for the AISSE. However, the Vidyalaya now has its own examination center.
Current Status of the Vidyalaya:
When the VKV was established, it had 185 students, 16 teachers, and 5 non-teaching staff. It now functions with around 220 students, 21 teachers and 6 non-teaching staff. The first batch of 6 students appeared for the AISSE Class X examination in 2001. Though the Vidyalaya initially had classes from I to X, the KG classes were added eventually. The students enrolled in the school are from both NEEPCO employee families and the local populace, predominantly belonging to the Lotha tribe.
Steadfast on the Mission of Man-Making & Nation-Building:
Both teachers and students of the Vidyalaya have always strived for excellence in all aspects under the guidance of Vivekananda Kendra, Kanyakumari. In past years, the students have exhibited excellence in various events like, UN Information Test, Painting Competition conducted by Bureau of Energy Conservation (Ministry of Power), National Science Talent Search Examination by Unified Council, Sit and Draw Competition organised by SBI, Krida Mahotsava, Lalit Kala Samaroh, Aryabhata Vijnan Sangosthi / Prakalpa (Science Seminar / Investigatory Science Project), Srimanta Shankardeva Natya Samaroh (Drama Competition), Maha Bhaskara Shastra Vijnan Pradarshani organised by VKSPV.
In addition to academic achievements, the school is dedicated to helping students develop inherent qualities such as self-confidence, a sense of righteousness, discipline, duty to society and the motherland, and a deep reverence for Bharat's rich cultural heritage.
During the decade, distinguished personalities like the Governor of Nagaland, the Speaker of Legislative Assembly, CMD of NEEPCO, Senior Karyakartas from Vivekananda Kendra Kanyakumari and many other eminent personalities visited the Vidyalaya and left their valuable impression to enrich and inspire the students and the school at large.
Many alumni are now working as professionals, including engineers, IT professionals, doctors, teachers, and defense and police personnel. Several students are pursuing higher studies in various prestigious institutions across the country.
